OUT ON A LIMB
A bumper crop of whitebark pine nuts is good news for Yellowstone's bears including this black bear sow and cub feasting on pine nuts along Dunraven Pass. The large seeds, or nuts, of whitebark pine are a high-energy food rich in fats, carbohydrates, and protein. This makes them a sought-after resource for bears fattening up in the fall before denning.
