After a gestation period of almost nine months, elk calves are born in late spring. Young calves remain with their mother for the first year of their lives until new calves are born. Female calves stay with their mother's herd indefinitely, while males inhabit the periphery of the herd for a number of years until they eventually disperse to bachelor herds.
