During spring, bison cows give birth to a single calf. Calves will stay close to their mother for their first year and once they mature, female calves will continue to live with their mother in maternal herds which include other females and their offspring. Male calves leave their maternal herd when they are three years old and will live alone or join other males in bachelor herds.
