The Jackson Bison Herd started in 1948 from a small herd of twenty that were captured in Yellowstone Park. All but four bison calves from this group were slaughtered in 1963, when brucellosis was discovered in the herd .The following year, twelve brucellosis-free bison were imported from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. From this small group of bison came the 1200 which currently comprise the Jackson herd.
