ON GOSSAMER WINGS

The sublime beauty of the Trumpeter Swan is almost otherworldly. These elegant birds are one of my favorites to photograph and each year I wait anxiously for their return to the park in late autumn. Trumpeters are a species of special concern in Yellowstone with only 29 resident swans in the park in 2016. Efforts have been made to bolster the park's waning swan population with birds being released in Hayden Valley for three consecutive years. Researchers hope some of the released birds will return to the park in the future to nest.
